Owadally and King will be exhibiting for the first time at this years The Business Show 2014 at the ExCel London and preparing well for it is a big task, there is so much to think about as we will be running a Business Planning Success workshop over the two days as well as a an exhibition stand. The Business Show is huge with 25,000 Businesses, 250 Seminars, 12 Workshops with much much more and it’s FREE to attend. First off we needed to think about our workshop how it would look, how many people would we want to attract for every workshop, what the attendee’s will be getting out it and what we want them to take away. Do we give each attendee a handout want should that handout be? Then there is staffing for the stand while the workshops are running, what do we need for the stand?, pens, pads, laptops, charges, Business cards etc all the little things that we cannot just pop to the office and get if forgotten. But we know this will be an exciting and challenging opportunity which we love here at OandK

Here is our workshop at a glance.

The majority of SMEs don’t have an effective written business plan and almost certainly not one that reflects the personal goals of the business owners. This workshop demonstrates, step-by-step, how to create a powerful One-Page Business Success Plan that focuses on the key elements of the business and acts as a great business tool to monitor success. It’s an effective plan that ensures momentum is maintained throughout the whole of your business.

By giving life-enhancing books to third world schools every time we finalise a set of accounts.

•And by giving an African family a sustainable source of food and an income, in the form of chickens, every time we wins a new client at O&K.

Here are some of the gifts we have given so far;

29 Child Immunisations, 116 School Uniforms, 140 Chickens.

“I WAS GETTING STALE – But this changed my life “

Please see below an article that was recently published on Steve Pipes website Steve is a highly regarded and respected strategist to the accountancy profession. He is the Founder and Head of Research for AVN, an association of over 200 pro-active UK accountancy firms, His many awards include being named the “UK Entrepreneur of the Year” by Accountancy Age magazine, and as the Best Contributor to accountingweb.co.uk.

Here’s the article…

“I was getting stale… but this has changed my life”

That’s how Simon Maddox described the impact becoming “socially responsible” has had on him and his practice when I interviewed him the other day. And it’s making a real difference commercially too. Simon is partner in two partner Owadally & King (‘O&K’), a Croydon based general practice with a total team of 17 people and a strong focus on tax. A few years ago he wrote down his goal as being to retire to the Yorkshire Dales by 2016. Now he is not so sure, as he is enjoying practice more than ever before.

What changed?

In late 2011 Simon heard about the initial plans for www.accountantschangingtheworld.com, and they resonated with his values as a man of faith. So much so, in fact, that it started him on a journey that has resulted in O&K making a profound difference:

► Globally to the lives of those living in poor and underprivileged parts of the world
► Locally to budding entrepreneurs from disadvantaged backgrounds
► And also to the future of their local community, by helping its young people launch their careers It has also helped O&K in striving to achieve a balance between assisting wealthy, high end clients as well as those less fortunate.

International impact

Inspired by the way Accountants Changing The World worked with www.b1g1.com, Simon showed the global charity International Needs http://www.ineeds.org.uk how it could enable people and businesses to give to the projects the charity supports. And, leading by example, O&K now does exactly that through International Needs by automatically:
► Giving life-saving vaccinations every time it completes an annual return for a client

► Giving life-enhancing books to third world schools every time it finalises a set of accounts

► And giving an African family a sustainable source of food and an income, in the form of chickens, every time it wins a new client. But that is only the start.

Local impact on budding entrepreneurs

“We wanted to make a real difference locally too”, explained Simon. “So when an innovative CIC came to us, having been let down by another firm, not only did we get to solve their accountancy issue within 24 hours, but we also got involved in their community work.”

Enterprise Cube CIC www.enterprisecube.org runs business start-up training courses for the residents of Housing Associations.

Enterprise CubeThe courses are free to delegates, because they are paid for by the Housing Associations, and give their tenants (many of whom are from very disadvantaged backgrounds) the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to set up their own businesses.
“Housing Associations are so keen to get involved, that it is difficult keeping up with demand” says Simon. “But it is really worth it, because the calibre and potential of some of the businesses we have helped to start is amazing. For example, one of the businesses I now mentor is a hat maker, and one of her hats was recently seen on the Graham Norton show being worn by the singer Paloma Faith”.

O&K help out in six main ways:

Mentoring – Currently Simon is mentoring two fledgling entrepreneurs who have been through Enterprise Cube’s training programme
Lecturing – Providing some of the basic book-keeping and understanding accounts elements of the training programme
Drop in Centre – On the first Friday of every month Simon takes his laptop and works remotely from Enterprise Cube’s offices. And every single entrepreneur who has been through the training programme knows that they can drop in on those days without an appointment and get instant free help from him.
Business Jam Events – Once a month Enterprise Cube invites experts from three different marketing firms, three law firms and three HR firms to sit in a room together for an evening and provide free advice to anybody who wants it. “They used to invite three accountancy firms as well. But now they tend to ask us to provide three members of staff, because we work really hard to pitch our advice at the right level – ie not so simple as to be condescending, but not so complex as to be off-putting”
Dragons Den style panels, but with a difference – The difference is that the panel is designed to be supportive, and every business that presents to the panel leaves with either some funding, some constructive advice or even, in some cases, a local government / housing association contract, since the leaders of the Council and Housing Association are also on the panel!
Strategic advice to the CIC itself – As trusted and committed partners, O&K are now helping the CIC to develop its strategy for growth so that it can meet the huge demand for its services.

Local impact on young people

hive_logo“We  have also now started working with
The  Hive-Croydon, initially as sponsors.
They deliver  Croydon’s Children’s University
and Routes, an employability skills programme for young people. And that is also really exciting as it helps children aged 5-19, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, to get an even better education that lays the foundation for a successful life and career.”

Impact on the practice

Simon was really keen to stress that “we categorically aren’t doing this for the money, and we never try to sell any of our services to any of the entrepreneurs we help.”
“But the really interesting thing is that, once people get to trust us, they tend to take the initiative in asking us to become their accountants on commercial terms. It’s a slow burn, but it really does work that way.” In fact, the benefits of giving in the way they do include:

► The three charities/CICs they work most closely with have all appointed O&K as their accountants
► As have some of the businesses they have helped. “Interestingly, the most recent drop in centre day resulted in us picking up three new clients. Two at £250 each, and one at £1500. So the slow burn is really beginning to spiral now”
► And the O&K team are energised. “I have been amazed at how quickly and fully the team have taken to it. They now really understand and are excited by the fact that business is not all about take, take, take. That in turn is improving service levels, productivity and job satisfaction across the firm”.
But perhaps the greatest benefit of all is what lies behind Simon’s assertion that “this has changed my life”.
“If I’m honest” he told me “I was getting a bit stale. But now I really look forward to coming to work. It’s so fulfilling knowing that we are part of something that is making a real difference”.

“And we’re not just helping to solve ‘easy’ problems, either. We are helping to solve some of society’s most intractable problems, because some of the people helped have been former gang members, drug addicts or homeless.”

“Who would have thought that as accountants we can make a difference in those sorts of areas. But I can tell you we can. And we are. In fact, it’s now why I get up in the morning.”

‘The view from the new kid on the block’

by Li Khabo our new Audit and Accounts Senior

Starting a new job is always unnerving, and I admittedly haven’t had lots of practice in it despite my advanced years but either way the biggest fear is that you never know what to expect. I started at O & K accountants on the 25th of June (6 weeks ago) as part of the Audit & Accounts team and I am loving every minute of it.

From the first day, everyone had that warm welcoming look which makes you have that “I’m in the right place” feeling. My workstation was ready for me from the word go and I was offered a cup of tea (I’m thinking, NICE!, I could get used to this, but I also thought this could be a ploy to ease me in gently). I am happy to report that 6 weeks on the cups of tea have kept coming.

The work has so far been both interesting and stimulating. I’ve been involved in 5 audits so far including one for a charity started by a world famous footballer and prolific striker who has been the bane of defenders the world over for years . The charity was started for the benefit of building a free hospital in his home country. I have had to put aside my loyalty to Arsenal FC and acknowledge that this is a good cause that needs to be encouraged and supported, despite the years of pain this particular striker inflicted on mine and other teams who came up against him.

O&K Sponsors at Sutton United FC   It’s not all work at O & K it seems; the company is one of the
proud sponsors of Sutton United FC.
We’ve hence had the opportunity to watch some pre-season
friendlies against Arsenal one week and Chelsea on
another week.

Despite those comfy corporate hospitality seats at Sutton United, my allegiance remains with my beloved Arsenal FC (sorry Sutton United!!), so I was delighted when the Gunners won 4-3, and I think it should have been more, but that’s for another day.

This sums up my 6 weeks at O & K so far. Back in the office, I have had all the help I need to settle into my role as an Audit and Accounts Senior. Both Farook and Simon have taken a moment every week so far to ask how I am getting along and what I am working on. This makes me feel like I not just another employee.

This is my view as the latest member to join the O & K Team.

Two Fathers, two sons, one cup final – What could possibly go wrong?

One Night in Istanbul (ONII)

2010 marked the start of an exciting relationship between Owadally and King (O&K) Accountants in Croydon and Big Ears Entertainment (BEE Ltd). Our Senior Partner Farook Owadally, was approached by his fellow directors in BEE to help raise finance for “One Night In Istanbul” a film based on a successful play, written by Nicky Allt and directed by James Marquand.

One Night in Istanbul, (ONII) includes actors Paul Barber (who recently visited O&K Accountants) best known as Denzel in Only Fools & Horses, Steve Waddington, Lucien Laviscount and Marc Hughes. ONII is based around the unforgettable Champions League Final of 2005 between AC Milan and Liverpool F.C. where a sensational comeback was witnessed by millions across the globe with Liverpool winning after going 3-0 down at half time.

The film however can be seen to be more of a family comedy with two cab drivers, Tommy and Gerry, getting involved in a risky deal which entails them taking their sons on a once in a lifetime trip to Istanbul to watch the final. Unfortunately, a perfect trip where Tommy and Gerry can bond with their sons is all too much to believe as the inevitable happens and the two cab drivers get caught up with two ruthless criminals, a bag of counterfeit cash and Hitler’s stolen cufflinks. Much like a miracle was needed for Liverpool to come back from 3-0 down against a formidable team, another miracle was required as not only was Tommy being held hostage but time was running out.Be sure to watch the movie when it’s released and watch the drama unfold.

The role that O&K accountants played in ONII is firstly as one of the executive producers of the film and also as the film’s production accountants. O&K has helped to raise finance for the film by using HMRC’s Approved Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) which helps limit the maximum potential risk for Investors to 42p for every pound of their investment, for a 40% taxpayer; for a 45% taxpayer the risk would reduce to 38.5p for every pound invested. The EIS scheme has proved to be attractive to Investors as regardless of the success of the film they can claim back 30% of their original investment into the scheme in Year 1. These are also other benefits of investing into the EIS scheme. More information can be seen on HMRC’s website.

ONII is hopefully set to be a success and will be released sometime in 2014. The partners of O&K have recently travelled with fellow producers, film cast and crew to Cannes for a launch party at Cannes film festival. A video clip of the party can be seen below.

WE LOVE PROMOTING SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At O & K we are committed to giving something back to our community and helping others.

As an accountancy practice in Croydon we have a young environment, and we are all socially connected. We believe we can make a difference in the world and especially in Croydon, even though we are a relatively small company.

“I truly believe that businesses that don’t address social responsibility, and more importantly, don’t put this at the heart of their operations, will suffer over the medium to long term” Richard Branson

“Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water, or do you want the chance to change the world?” Steve Jobs

We have been sponsors at the Croydon Business Awards for the past three years and we will continue to support this local event.

Three of the biggest challenges of our time are

  1. Economic stagnation.
  2. Poverty and suffering.
  3. Youth unemployment

O&K are committed to giving back to help empower those less unfortunate than ourselves. So here is what we are going to do…………

Firstly we have agreed as an accountancy firm in Croydon to support the work of Paul Funnell and his Croydon company Enterprise Cube C.I.C.

Image

Paul and his team have been working with housing associations, homeless hostels, even ex-offenders and ex-gang members providing 10 week business start up programmes.

With a host of new partners in their work to help disadvantage people start businesses their first 3 months have been busy, and they’ve seen many businesses flourish, further convincing us that enterprise can change lives and of the benefit of Creating & Unlocking Business for Everyone!

The programmes have been so well received that Enterprise Cube is now running courses in Bromley and Maidenhead. They are pleased to announce they’ll soon be embarking on their next set of Strive programmes across England.
Up to 175 disadvantaged and local entrepreneurs will join them as they launch seven new Strive programmes during 2013 with a great collection of partners including Affinity Sutton, Genesis, Housing Solutions and Riverside Homeless Hostel.

At the end of a ten week programme residents / participants get the opportunity to present their business idea to a panel, who ask questions of them and give them advice.

Enterpise Cube in Maidenhead with Simon Maddox of O&K and Home Secretary Theresa May

I was lucky enough to be invited to Maidenhead for one such presentation and was asked to be on a panel with Cllr David Burbage, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and John Petit Housing Solutions Chief Executive. The panel awarded an incredible package of Housing Solutions backed start-up support including: social start-up loans, contracts, memberships to the chamber of commerce, free marketing and ongoing support from the CUBE team.

ImageTheresa May, Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, joined us  presenting the residents the numerous start-up support packages as they graduated from their Strive Further Start-up training programme.

“It’s a great day and exciting to see the great work [Enterprise CUBE] are having in helping residents to start businesses”, said the Home Secretary before going on to present certificates to start-ups she hopes will go on to become successful businesses that will create employment for other people in the community.

It’s a great start to a relationship which we hope will make a real difference to peoples lives.

Paul Barber – star of legendary TV series ‘Only Fools and Horses’, ‘The Full Monty’ and soon to be released comedy drama film ‘One Night In Instanbul’ visits our team

Actor Paul Barber, who has appeared on our TV and Movie screens over the past 30 years, made a welcome visit to our offices in Croydon on Wednesday 24th April.

Paul, perhaps best known for playing Denzel in Only Fools and Horses, and for staring in The Full Monty, was visiting the team at O&K as they are the Executive Producers of the soon to be released film ‘One Night in Istanbul’ jointly produced by Big Ears Entertainment and Stray Dogs Films. For the latest behind the scene and teaser trailers go to www,oniimovie.com.

Paul Barber with the team at O&K2Quote from Farook Owadally – Senior Partner – Owadally and King

“In 2010 I was approached by a fellow Director of Big Ears Entertainment to get involved in the film which had already received rave reviews as a stage play in Liverpool. Not only was it interesting from a financial point of view in terms of helping to raise finance, but as an avid Liverpool FC fan it had obvious attractions. After extensive due diligence, it was satisfying to be able to make it an attractive investment proposition via an Entreprise Investment Scheme for our clients and business contacts. After having spent time with Paul on location it was great to see him at our Croydon offices giving him the chance to meet the accountancy team and telling them about the world of TV and movies”.

Quote from Paul Barber

“It was good to meet the team at O&K in Croydon and to have the chance to give them an insight into what the new movie is all about. I had a fab time making it and it’s a film that I am particularly proud of”.
